The Mulberry fly to have here! This is the one that is featured in the Carpin’ DVD with our very own Brian Flechsig and Dave Whitlock. This is also the fly that was the focus of the Walker’s Cay Chronicles with Flip Pallot and Brian (see our YouTube Channel to watch the episode).
This fly was shown to Brian many years ago by an old timer here in Ohio. It is basically a sucker spawn fly tied with Black or Purple Chenille.
As anybody who fishes the mulberry knows though, they must have the right “plop” as they enter the water. Otherwise, the fish may not pay attention. After trying a variety of ways to weight this fly, Brian finally settled on a thin thread of Zap-a-Gap on the underside of the hook shank. Gives this fly just the right “plop”!
Carp Mulberry Fly sold here in Black and tied on a #10 Daiichi 1530 hook. The black seems to be best when the berries are good and ripe but a good idea to have a few purple on hand just in case.
